IRS Expands Business Tax Account Access to C Corporations: What You Need to Know

by Cheryl Saroukhanoff | May 26, 2025 | Corporate Tax Services, Flow-Through Tax Services | 0 comments

As part of its ongoing modernization efforts, the IRS has expanded access to its Business Tax Account platform to include C Corporations—a move that signals a significant leap forward in simplifying tax administration for corporate taxpayers.

Previously available to sole proprietors, partnerships, and S Corporations, this expansion means that more businesses can now take advantage of secure, centralized access to key tax information—without the long hold times and snail-mail delays.

If your business is structured as a C Corporation, here’s what this new access means for you.

What Is the IRS Business Tax Account?

The IRS Business Tax Account is a secure online portal that allows businesses to view tax balances, manage notices, authorize third-party access, and more—all in one place. The platform is part of the IRS’s push toward digital-first, user-centric services, designed to reduce administrative burden and improve visibility into your tax posture.

What’s New for C Corporations?

Until recently, only pass-through entities like partnerships and S Corps had limited access to this portal. As of 2024, C Corporations can now set up their own IRS Business Tax Accounts and benefit from features tailored to their structure and filing needs.

C Corporations Can Now:

  • View tax balances across all open periods
  • Access digital copies of IRS notices
  • Request account transcripts and payment histories
  • Manage third-party access, including CPA or tax advisor permissions
  • Update entity information, such as business address and responsible party details
  • View and pay their corporation’s tax balances and make Federal Tax Deposits

While not every IRS function is yet available via the portal, the list of features is expected to expand rapidly, especially for corporate taxpayers.

Who Can Set Up and Access a C Corp’s IRS Business Account?

The IRS currently allows business owners or corporate officers—such as the President, CEO, CFO, or duly authorized individuals—to register on behalf of a corporation.

To set up an account, you’ll need:

  • Your Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Verification through ID.me, the IRS’s identity authentication partner
  • Government-issued photo ID and a smartphone for facial verification
  • Access to your email and mobile phone for two-factor authentication
  • The business officer must receive a W-2 and be legally authorized to bind the business

💡 Note: Access is limited to returns that have already been filed and processed. If your C Corp is newly formed, you may need to wait until the first tax return is on file.

How to Set Up a C Corp IRS Business Tax Account

Setting up a Business Tax Account takes about 15 minutes and can be done online:

  1. Visit the IRS Business Tax Account page
  2. Click “Create an Account” and follow the ID.me verification steps
  3. Upload a government-issued photo ID and complete facial recognition
  4. Authenticate your email and phone number
  5. Log in and start managing your business’s tax data

For added security, the IRS recommends setting up an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) to prevent fraudulent access. You can do that here.
