Taxpayers who need to prove their federal tax compliance now have a faster way to obtain and share that information. On August 20, 2026, the IRS announced a new digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report available through the IRS Individual Online Account. The report is designed for situations where a taxpayer may need to demonstrate tax compliance when applying for a loan, employment, government benefits, or another service.
Instead of relying on paper correspondence or assembling multiple tax transcripts, taxpayers can download a standardized report directly from their IRS Individual Online Account.
What the new Tax Compliance Report shows
The Tax Compliance Report provides a summary of whether a taxpayer has filed required returns and paid federal taxes as required. Depending on the taxpayer’s account, the report can show a status of compliant, noncompliant, or indicate a compliance issue. It may also identify outstanding balances, late filings, late payments, or certain other compliance concerns.
The report is intentionally narrower than a tax return. It does not disclose information such as income, dependents, or filing status, which can make it useful when a third party needs confirmation of compliance without access to unnecessary personal tax information.
Built-in digital authentication makes the report easier to verify
Each report downloaded through the Individual Online Account includes an IRS-issued digital certificate. Banks, government agencies, employers, and other organizations receiving the original file can use the certificate to confirm that the report is authentic and has not been altered.
Taxpayers should share the original downloaded PDF when verification is required. According to the IRS, screenshots, scanned copies, and files created using “Print to PDF” do not retain the digitally authenticated document.
Some browsers and mobile PDF viewers may also fail to display the authentication details. The IRS recommends saving the original PDF and opening it in Adobe Reader on a desktop computer when the certificate needs to be viewed.
Check your IRS account before you need the report
The new report gives taxpayers another reason to establish online account access before a lender, employer, or government agency requests tax information.
It can also provide an early opportunity to identify a missing return, outstanding balance, or account issue that could complicate an application.
Keep in mind that recent activity may not appear immediately. The IRS currently advises that payments can take approximately two weeks to post, while recently filed returns can take approximately four to six weeks.
How Aura Advisors can help with IRS Tax Compliance Reports
The new IRS Tax Compliance Report can make compliance verification easier, but an unexpected status should be reviewed before the report is submitted to a lender, government agency, or other requesting organization.
Aura Advisors can help taxpayers reconcile IRS account information with filed returns and payment records, identify the source of an outstanding compliance issue, and determine the appropriate steps when the IRS account does not reflect the taxpayer’s records.
